The Acute Burns Range is a clinically informed burn simulation kit designed for realistic first aid and early burn management training. Featuring fire, scald, contact and electrical burns—including essential electrical entry and exit wounds—this range prepares responders to recognise and treat acute burn injuries with confidence in the critical first hours.

Description

The Acute Burns Range by TraumaSim is a highly realistic burn simulation kit designed to help first aid trainers, responders and educators deliver accurate, hands-on training for the critical first hours following a burn injury. Unlike generic moulage or single-style burn props, the Acute Burns Range provides clinically informed, anatomically realistic simulations of fire burns, scald burns, contact burns and electrical burns—with all injuries representing the essential 0–2 hour acute phase where early decisions have the greatest impact on patient outcomes.

Developed in collaboration with Professor Fiona Wood AO, one of the world’s leading burns specialists, the Acute Burns Range ensures each wound accurately reflects real burn presentation, tissue pattern, colour and depth. This alignment with clinical reality allows learners to identify early burn indicators, apply appropriate first aid techniques and develop rapid decision-making skills essential in time-critical environments.

What Sets the Acute Burns Range Apart?

Burns occurring in the first few minutes to hours can present differently based on their cause—fire, scalds, chemicals, contact or electricity. Standard training tools rarely differentiate these injury types, leaving learners unprepared for the real visual and tactile clues required for effective treatment. The Acute Burns Range addresses this gap by providing accurate wound variations for each burn mechanism.

The inclusion of electrical entry and exit wounds makes this kit especially valuable. Electrical burns often appear deceptively mild on the surface while hiding deeper, more dangerous tissue damage beneath. The ability to teach correct recognition and early management of electrical burns is essential for first aid trainers, mining sites, industrial workplaces, emergency responders and anyone operating in high-risk environments.

Acute Burns Range Components

  • Forearm Self-Adhesive TraumaWear: Fire Burn (0–2 hours)
  • Forearm Self-Adhesive TraumaWear: Scald Burn (0–2 hours)
  • Reversible Hand TraumaWear: Contact Burn (0–2 hours and 24–48 hours)
  • Finger Glove: Electrical Entry Wound
  • Self-Adhesive Silicone Wound: Electrical Exit Wound

Key Features of the Acute Burns Range

  • Realistic acute burn presentation focusing on the essential 0–2 hour window
  • Fire, scald, contact and electrical burns represented with clinical accuracy
  • Electrical entry and exit wounds for high-value training in industrial and emergency settings
  • Wearable and self-adhesive components for fast setup and repeat training scenarios
  • Designed for first aid training, workplace safety programs and early burn care education

Learning Outcomes

  • Recognise the immediate visual characteristics of different burn mechanisms
  • Differentiate fire, scald, contact and electrical burns in the acute phase
  • Apply correct first aid response for each burn type, including cooling, protection and escalation
  • Improve confidence, communication and accuracy in the crucial early minutes of burn care

Applications for Acute Burn Simulation

  • First aid and workplace safety training
  • Emergency response and industrial site preparedness
  • Clinical and allied health education programs
  • Mining, construction, utilities and electrical safety courses

Expert Collaboration

The Acute Burns Range was developed with the guidance of Professor Fiona Wood AM, ensuring that the wounds in this kit reflect the true clinical presentation of acute burn injuries. Her input helped TraumaSim shape the anatomical realism, colour, depth and patterning of each burn type, supporting accurate, evidence-based training for both new and experienced responders.

“My consultations with TraumaSim have enabled the creation of high-fidelity burns training resources that reflect the challenges of real-world care. Such realism drives deeper learning and leads to better outcomes for those suffering burn injuries.”

Why Not Training with the Acute Burns Range Creates Risk

First aid responders frequently encounter burns caused by fire, hot liquids, electrical exposure and direct contact. Without accurate wound representation, trainees may misidentify the burn type, underestimate severity or apply incorrect treatment. Electrical burns in particular can be easily missed—visible entry and exit wounds may appear small despite significant underlying tissue damage. The Acute Burns Range ensures learners are exposed to these critical differences, reducing hesitation and improving decisions when seconds matter.
